Lesson Plans for Middle School and High School Teachers
Four Museum Teacher Fellows (MTFs) from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) working as independent contractors created lessons and activities based on the themes and exhibitions at the Tucson Jewish Museum & Holocaust Center. These four teachers used a common format for the lesson plans and worked together to create lessons utilizing resources from USHMM and Echoes & Reflections, but also brand new activities and lessons to support the exhibitions at TJMHC.
Arizona Department of Education
The Arizona Department of Education provides resources, training, and support for educators who teach about the history of the Holocaust and other genocides. Arizona House Bill 2241, known as the Holocaust Education Bill, which became law in July 2021, requires that all Arizona public schools teach about the Holocaust and other genocides at least twice between 7th and 12th grades.

Can students hear from a Holocaust survivor during their visit?
Yes. A Holocaust survivor may be requested when you schedule your tour, though their presence depends on availability. TJMHC also has online survivor testimonies you can access.
How many visitors can TJMHC host? How far in advance should I schedule my tour?
TJMHC doesn’t have a strict limit, though starting at ~40 visitors, we split tour groups up, and especially large groups may need to be staggered. Tours should be scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance, though we recommend scheduling earlier for maximal availability.
What background knowledge are students expected to have?
Students are not required to have any previous knowledge of the Holocaust, genocide, local Jewish history, or Jewish religious and cultural concepts. However, different knowledge levels may help us personalize the tour and cater to your students’ needs.
I’d like to bring my students over, but we don’t have the budget for it. What can I do?
TJMHC offers a bus scholarship program for educators who are unable to bring students over. We typically offer up to $150 for transportation costs, though special cases may be considered. Educators are responsible for acquisition of the bus or other transportation service, however.
How can I stay updated on local offerings for educators?
We encourage any and all educators to sign up for our general newsletter, and can add any educators to our teacher mailing list upon request. Other mailing lists to explore include the Phoenix Holocaust Association, the Martin-Springer Institute, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the International Sites of Conscience Coalition.
