“What's a Nice Jewish Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This?"

Elaine Leeder has spent the last 28 years working in the California prison system. Her work in Restorative Justice, with both victims and perpetrators, has shown her that redemption, remorse, and contrition exist behind the walls.

As part of the JCRC's Hineni lecture series, Dr. Leeder will discuss the Jewish values and spirituality like teshuvah (charity), chesed (loving kindness) and tikkun olam (the act of repairing the world) that deeply inform her work.

Hineni - Articulating a Jewish Response to Contemporary Social Challenges

Hineni is typically translated from Hebrew as "Here I am." This lecture series takes a deeper dive into the concept, inviting participants to reflect on the ways that Judaism and social action intersect in their personal and communal lives. The program is designed for members of the Jewish community, along with their allies, to explore contemporary social issues in a way that creates opportunities for engagement, collaboration, and long-term impact in our community.
