Temple of Shadows

Curated: 2007

Abigail Gumbiner is the daughter of Rabbi Joseph Gumbiner, who held services in the original Temple Emanu-El during the 1940s. “Temple of Shadows” is a photographic chronicle spanning more than fifteen years, beginning with the abandoned building in the 1990s until the full restoration of the Stone Avenue Temple Project in 2007. In 1995, Gumbiner and her friends, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew and David H. Wells, had been hired to come to Tucson to photograph the rodeo. They came to check on the old Stone Avenue Temple, and began to take black and white photographs of the dilapidated building. Over the next decade the trio made several return trips to Tucson to photograph, in both black and white and color, the building’s restoration project.
