Dear Members and Friends,

The new exhibit at the Jewish History Museum includes a 1950s yellow vinyl table with chrome chairs; the table is set with a 1950s Shabbat dinner complete with bowls of mock matzo ball soup.  It was intentionally constructed to provoke discussion but little did we know just how interactive the exhibit would be.  Visitors just seem to naturally pull out a yellow chair and sit down as if they were at their childhood dinette set.

We have enjoyed sharing stories with our museum visitors and then one day one of those visitors asked a question that was thought provoking in a deeper way.  As he looked around the JHM exhibits which chronicle the accomplishments of our ancestors he asked:

“Who will remember me? Who will record what our generation accomplished?”

We are a disposable society; we toss out, tear down and push the delete button at an alarming rate.  Our generation doesn’t save “stuff.” We don’t write letters or keep journals. We email or Skype or pick up the cell to tell the next generation our “story.” Our mantra seems to be a constant downsize. Newspapers once were the chronicles of the world.  Today few of us subscribe, the papers are thinner and much more slanted in their reporting.  Birth and death records as well as property records will soon be only electronic and will be held in nano files only as long as the legal requirements…another record of “our story” soon to be sent into the Ethernet of once there was.

Who will remember us?  There is only one place that is the memory of humankind
A MUSEUM.

Who will tell our story, remember our accomplishments,
explain our failures and keep a traceable record of our footprints?

YOUR MUSEUM.

Those before us saved the stories of our ancestors for US. NOW it is our turn to save our stories for the future generations.  The Jewish History Museum depends on membership and donations to fulfill its mission of collecting, preserving, exhibiting and teaching the Southern Arizona Jewish story, which includes YOUR STORY.  By becoming a member you assure that future generations will REMEMBER YOU.

Please become a member of JHM today. Thank you for  your continued  support - it is essential to our fulfilling our mission.

We invite you to come visit the museum, pull out a yellow chair and tell us YOUR story.
